Wallace “Wally” Amos, the creator of the cookie empire that took his name and made it famous, and who became an inspirational figure for entrepreneurs around the world, has died. He was 88.

Amos died Friday at his home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, according to a statement Saturday from his family. The cause of death was not given.

Amos was born in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1936. He started his cookie empire in 1975 with a $25,000 loan from friends. The Famous Amos cookies quickly became a hit, and Amos became a celebrity chef and author.

Amos was also a philanthropist and motivational speaker. He founded the Famous Amos Foundation, which supports educational programs for underprivileged children.

Amos’s death is a loss for the business community and the world of philanthropy. He was a true pioneer who inspired countless people with his story of success and his commitment to giving back.
