The Good

From the beginning, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is buoyant and playful in a way that legacy sequels usually aren't allowed to be. Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley, the Detroit detective, and he's no longer the fast young cop we last saw 30 years ago.

There's an art to crafting modern sequels to movies that otherwise put a full stop on their stories way back in the 80s or 90s. The heat is gone, replaced by warm nostalgia. John Ashton is left out, but Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold reunite in Axel F, which begins the same way the first three movies in the series began: with Axel Foley in the midst of a chaotic mission.
