January 20, 2023

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Former Texas State standout Anicka Newell has advanced to the women's pole vault final at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Newell cleared 4.55 meters in the qualifying round, which was good enough for fifth place overall. The top 12 vaulters advanced to the final, which will be held on Friday, July 30 at 5:20 a.m. CST.

This is Newell's first Olympic Games. She is a two-time NCAA champion and the American record holder in the pole vault. She is also the reigning World Indoor champion.

Newell is one of two former Texas State athletes competing in the Olympics. Former Bobcat sprinter Ruth Usoro is also competing in the women's 100 meters.

Newell's advancement to the final is a great accomplishment for her and for Texas State. She is a role model for young athletes and an inspiration to everyone who follows her story.

We wish Anicka the best of luck in the final and are proud to support her as she represents Texas State on the world stage.
